Hong Kong Plus 6 Months
“This is going to a self assessment that I’m going to issue once a month to gauge my progress since I’ve been here (Aug 7, 2008). By progress, I’m referring to things I’ve learned or come across that has or will benefit myself in one form or another. I ask 3 basic questions to help evaluate my growth and identify what I need to focus my attention towards. You can take this for what it’s worth, but this is for my personal guidance to make sure I hit goals and stay on track. My two main goals coming to Asia were to develop a true understanding of Chinese culture & lifestyle while establishing a foundation on which to execute business ventures.”
What have you learned in relation to Hong Kong?
1. Not sure if you can call this a HK trend, but I’ve been noticing youngsters of both genders wearing trucker caps that just barely sit on top of their heads. Looks like the weakest nudge or slightest breeze could knock it off. Everytime I see that I resist the urge to walk up and pull the hat all the way down or simply slap it off their heads. No offense to those readers who might happen to wear their hats like so. Just a matter of preference.
2. Traffic lights turn from red, yellow to green and vice versa. In the States there’s no advance yellow warning before going to green. I find it convenient to see the yellow light beforehand as it eliminates the need to watch intersecting traffic to estimate when you can go. Maybe I’m a bit impatient.
3. Coke is preferred over Pepsi. I knew this before coming to Hong Kong, but always being a Pepsi fan, I now find it too sweet and can’t even finish a whole can. Coke goes down smoother and is now the way to go.
4. I might have learned one or two new Chinese characters at most. Now it’s all about retaining the words I’ve learned so far.
What have you done to help yourself professionally?
1. Gone on a no fried, no baked, low carb, high protein diet. No, I’m not fat or trying to lose weight but want to keep a little healthier this year. The healthier I am the less down time there will be when it comes to the business.
2. Continued business registration.
3. Cranked out and still cranking designs.
4. Set launch date.
Goals for next time?
1. Keep reviewing and applying learned Chinese words.
2. Have prototypes done and ready for production.
