Hong Kong Plus 5 Months

Category: My Blurbs

“This is going to a self assessment that I’m going to issue once a month to gauge my progress since I’ve been here (Aug 7, 2008). By progress, I’m referring to things I’ve learned or come across that has or will benefit myself in one form or another. I ask 3 basic questions to help evaluate my growth and identify what I need to focus my attention towards. You can take this for what it’s worth, but this is for my personal guidance to make sure I hit goals and stay on track. My two main goals coming to Asia were to develop a true understanding of Chinese culture & lifestyle while establishing a foundation on which to execute business ventures.”

What have you learned in relation to Hong Kong?

1. I hate Hong Kong coins! Well I hate carry around any kind of coins, but Hong Kong coins aren’t the kind you just want to save because they add up quickly and can probably pay for most munchies and meals. They include 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, and $10. I try to carry change whenever I can and it usually pays off.

2. Many convenience stores, like Mannings, have reward programs on purchases. Purchases earn you stickers which they give along with the receipt upon payment. I haven’t looked in detail as to what you can get, but it would be nice if 7-eleven offered the same especially for all my alcohol purchases.

3. There’s no need to pick up after yourself when done eating (such as @ McDonald’s). This may be an Asia wide trend, but nevertheless not something I’m used to. Personally, I think it’s bad manners and prefer to clean my own mess.

4. A few more Chinese characters.

What have you done to help yourself professionally?

1. Trip to Taipei to solidify business contact.

2. Began business registration process for Hong Kong.

3. Continued design research.

4. Tentatively planned business launch date.

Goals for next time?

1. Continue learning new Chinese words.

2. Set launch date.

A new year will hopefully bring about big change. I’m continually at a constant battle with myself to get things off the ground in a well manner. So far I feel everything heading towards the right direction and hope to make positive results. Only time and my ongoing efforts will be judge of this.
